Online Saturday & Sundays Fire & Life Safety Director (FLSD)

The course is conducted over three weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), totaling six live online class sessions from 8:30am to 2:00pm.

This is the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) accredited online course delivered virtually through a live, face-to-face learning platform for Fire & Life Safety Directors (FLSD). This course provides the required 31 hours of instruction

The FLSD course is divided into two components:

  1. Fire Safety Component
  2. Non-Fire Emergencies with Active Shooter/Medical Emergencies Component

Note: FDNY requires students to attend all scheduled online classes to be eligible to take the required training course’s final examinations for each component.

School Completion letter will be issued after the candidates obtain a passing score of 70% for each final exam. Candidates shall be allowed two (2) opportunities to pass each exam. Candidates who fail the class exams on the second attempt are required to re-attend the course in its entirety.

Device Requirements:

Students must have access to a computer or laptop with a functional camera and internet connection. Students are not allowed to take online classes using mobile devices, including iPads or cell phones.

Platform & Delivery Format:
The course is conducted live via Zoom. The instructor will be present and visible at all times during each session. Students are required to be visible on camera throughout the class. Cameras may be turned off only during scheduled breaks. Any student who leaves the camera’s view without permission will be marked absent.

5 to 7 days before the first scheduled online class, the email address provided during student registration will receive two emails:

  1. First Email
    This email will include:

    • A request for a copy of the student’s government-issued ID for identity verification
    • Links to the class manuals
    • An attachment titled FDNY FLSD Qualifications, which must be reviewed, signed, and returned to NYFSI for our records
  2. Second Email
    This email will contain:

    • Zoom links for accessing the online class
    • Instructions for setting up a US Online Testing account, which is required for taking class-administered tests

Candidates who complete the required FLSD course and pass both FDNY fire and non-fire component computer exams at the FDNY but do not meet the FDNY qualification criteria will NOT receive the Certificate of Completion and will NOT be able to schedule the FLSD On-Site exam.

When will I receive the Zoom link for the online classes?
You will receive the Zoom link via email. The first email is sent between 5 to 7 days prior to your first online class, the second email follows 24 to 48 hours before your first online session.
